 Porosity of Petroleum Reservoir Rocks Sedimentary rock consists of grains of solid matter with varying shapes that are more or less cemented and between which there is empty space (Figure 2.1). It is these empty spaces that are able to contain fluids such as water or liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons and allow them to circulate. Figure 2.1 Porosity Porosity is defined quantitatively as the ratio of void space in the rock to bulk volume of that rock, expressed as a fraction multiplied by 100 to express in percent. Basically, porosity means storage capacity that can indicate the amount of fluid that the porous medium can store.
