Alternative to Petroleum Based Products

Eco-Friendly Alternatives to Petroleum-Based Products

The reasons to reduce our reliance on petroleum are manifold - ranging from health and environmental concerns to political considerations. The Gulf oil spill serves as a stark reminder of our dependency on oil. While we're familiar with ways to cut down on fuel consumption (think gasoline and heating oil), let's explore additional strategies to minimize our use of petroleum.

Understanding Common Petroleum-Derived Items

Before we delve into alternatives, let's recognize everyday items that owe their existence to petroleum:

1. Plastics & Synthetic Rubber:

  • Plastic bags, containers, and various synthetic rubber products dominate our lives.
  • But fear not - there are eco-friendly alternatives!

2. Paints and Coatings:

  • Paints, thinners, lacquers, and solvents contain petroleum-based ingredients.
  • These materials release low-level toxic emissions into the air long after application.

3. Petroleum Wax:

  • Paraffin wax finds its way into candy making, packaging, candles, crayons, matches, and polishes.
  • Even petroleum jelly (used in medical products and toiletries) has its roots in oil.

4. Synthetic Fibers, Fertilizers, and Pesticides:

  • Polyester clothing, fertilizers, and pesticides - all have petroleum connections.
  • And let's not forget miscellaneous items like hair spray and printing inks.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives

1. Plastics and Synthetic Rubber:

  •   Reusable Bags: Many grocery and clothing stores now offer reusable bags made from corn or hemp.
  • Biodegradable Garbage Bags: Opt for eco-degradable garbage bags in various sizes and strengths.
  • Plant-Based Utensils: Manufacturers create disposable utensils (knives, forks, spoons) from plant starch.
  • Sugarcane Plates: Yes, even disposable plates can be made from sugarcane.

2. PVC-Free Products:

  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is widely used but potentially toxic. Look for PVC-free alternatives.
  • Brands like Avery and Wilson Jones offer PVC-free binders and office products.

3. Healthier Paint Options:

  • Casein Paint: Derived from milk proteins, casein paint has been used for centuries. It dries quickly and comes in a matte finish.
  • Lime Wash: Made by combining limestone (calcium-based mineral) with water, lime wash provides a unique, glowing finish. Use it indoors or outdoors.
