Petroleum Engineering: From Reservoir to Surface in the Context of Engineering Decision-Making under Uncertainty

Petroleum engineering is a very specialized field. Reservoir engineers, drilling engineers, production engineers, process engineers, and facilities engineers all bring the critical skills to developing and operating an oil or gas field. While specialization has greatly moved the industry forward, there is one issue it created: in many cases, engineering decisions are made with in disciplines rather than at a systems level.
It takes more than optimizing a individual part to develop a modern field.
Decisions about the reservoir have a ripple effect on well performance, production system performance, facility performance, transportation infrastructure and ultimately economic performance of an asset. This became even more clear over the last 20 or 30 years as petroleum operations become more complex. A key factor of petroleum engineering is uncertainty. The characteristics of reservoir rocks are not perfectly known but are estimated. Production predictions are based on assumption, that change over time.
The life of a field involves the continuously evolving impact of operational constraints, economic and political situations and technical limitations.

Therefore, engineering judgement is as important as engineering calculation. In successful operations, all of these are considered and combined into a logical framework for decision making. Integrated reservoir to surface view provide that framework.
Instead of dealing with each engineering discipline as separate unit, one view the petroleum production process as an engineering flow in which every decision influences all subsequent stage.
This is the book that explains this perspective to engineers.
