If you manage a website that allows access to the root directory, such as through cPanel, FTP, or Git-based hosting (like GitHub Pages), you’re eligible to activate IndexNow — a fast indexing protocol by Bing and Yandex.

This article walks you through the practical steps to enable IndexNow manually, from generating your key to submitting your URLs.

Step 1: Generate Your IndexNow Key

  • Visit the official IndexNow page at https://www.bing.com/indexnow.
  • Generate a random key string (8–128 characters).
  • Copy and save the key for later use.

Example key:
ab1234567890xyz9876543210abcd

Step 2: Create a .txt File with the Key

  • Open a plain text editor (e.g., Notepad).
  • Paste the key into the file (only the key, no extra text).
  • Save the file using the key itself as the filename:
    ab1234567890xyz9876543210abcd.txt

Step 3: Upload the File to Your Website’s Root Directory

  • Use your hosting control panel, FTP, or file manager to upload the .txt file to your site’s root folder.

Example access URL:
https://yourdomain.com/ab1234567890xyz9876543210abcd.txt

Make sure you can open the link in your browser and it shows only the raw key.

Step 4: Submit Your URLs to IndexNow

Once the key file is live, you can submit your updated URLs directly to search engines.

Example (GET request format):

https://www.bing.com/indexnow?url=https://yourdomain.com/page1&key=ab1234567890xyz9876543210abcd

Paste the URL into your browser and check for a success message like “200 OK”.

Helpful Tools:

  • You can use advanced tools like Postman or cURL to send POST requests for bulk submissions.
  • Some CMS platforms like WordPress offer plugins (e.g., RankMath) that automate this process.

Important Notes:

  • The key file must be publicly accessible from any browser.
  • Do not rename or modify the key file contents.
  • You can reuse the same key unless you choose to regenerate a new one.
